Winemaker's Notes
This vintage embraces the dense and deep crimson-purple compliment ripe aromas of red currant, anise, black cherry, dried cranberry and tar minerality infused with subtle floral aromas of lavender, peony and crushed violets. Crème de cassis, crushed pepper, tobacco, leather and mulberry jam with velvet reception, finished with notes of earth, chocolate and black truffle. This Cabernet clearly expresses the terroir of the 'King' and Cassiopiea' vineyards with its tremendous opulence, appropriate sophistication and flavor complexities.
Accolades
- 92 POINTS "Flying Horse 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley);
$25. This is the kind of Cabernet that’s soft and accessible
enough to drink now. It’s rich in blackberry, cherry and spice
flavors, with a sweet edge of charred wood. Saved from mere simplicity
by a fine, firm tannic structure." Editors’ Choice. —S.H.

Cabernet Sauvignon
We are reaping the rewards of the past three years of hard work in the vineyard. Our focus on strengthening and addressing the below the ground needs of the vine is paying off with a more protective canopy giving us the much needed hang time to allow our tannins to fully develop. We are in a climate of extremes, dodging late frost and midseason heat to cold nights again as October wears on.
This vintage has given us a lovely wine. The pretty and familiar aromas of King Block: orange blossom, fresh bay, white pepper and black cherry intermingle with the warm and earthy notes from Cassiopeia block: red currant, dried cranberry, sandalwood, and damp earth. The floral aromas of dried violets and rose petals give way to cooked cherries, raspberry and cassis with a finish of cacao bean and roasted coffee.
Accolades
- 92 POINTS - "Flying Horse 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley);
$25. This is one of those “best kept secrets” that pop
up from time to time. The grapes come from the warm Pope Valley
region, and the wine, made from free run juice, was aged in 55%
new French oak. It has the feel and taste of Cabernets far more
expensive. Almost overripe, it veers back at the last minute into
pure, sweet blackberry essence. A great bargain, but only 317 cases
were produced."

2006 Napa Valley Petite Sirah
Technical Data
Varietal: 100% Petite Sirah
Appellation: 100% Napa Valley
Process: Aged in 100% French Oak 30% new Oak
Alcohol: 14.3%
TA: .60
pH: 3.88
Production: 134 cases produced
Winemaker’s Notes
Our first vintage from our Petite Sirah block has proven what a good fit we have found for our site. Beautiful to look at, rich saturated crimson, with alluring aromas of cooked blueberry, dried cherry, allspice and earthy loam combine with fresh peppercorn and dried rose petal. Structured and compact in the mouth, this wine begs for decanting and a bit of time in the glass to fully open and express itself. Fine grain tannins support a well defined mid palate finishing with dark roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate. This wine continues to evolve and will easily drink well in 15+ years.
Pairs well with hearty winter dishes, especially venison and game birds and mixed milk aged cheeses.
Accolades
- 90+ POINTS - "This was quite a discovery. For all you Petite Sirah hussies, this
2006 Petite Sirah over-delivers. If it were better known, it would
probably sell for $50 or more a bottle. It exhibits a dense purple
color along with classic aromas of blueberries, flowers, licorice,
pepper and meat. Full-bodied and super-concentrated, with civilized
tannins, this impressive, bargain-priced treasure needs to be
discovered by more consumers." - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
- 90 POINTS - "Flying Horse Winery 2006 Petite Sirah (Napa Valley);
$35. There’s some sweaty, funky stuff going on with this
Petite Sirah, along with massive blackberry, currant and tobacco flavors.
The tannins are big, furry and strong, and the finish is bone
dry. Shows that slightly rustic “Pet” quality, but in an upscale Napa
way. Now–2020." —S.H.
